Pirates and Pilgrims

Eleuthera means freedom. The name is derived from ancient Greek and bestowed upon Eleuthera by Roger Sayles and his group of religious dissenters who left England and Bermuda in the mid-seventeenth century for the purpose of pursuing their faith. Sayles' venture was borne out of the same controversy that pushed the Pilgrims towards Massachusetts. Landing (or rather shipwrecking) on the northern end of the island of "Cigatoo," Sayles hearty band soon proceeded to Governor's Harbour and set up the first Republican form of government in the New World. Eventually, Sayles founded the Bahamian captial at Nassau on the nearby island of New Providence, which also became a haven for cutthroat pirates and other vagabonds.

More than a century later, in the 1780's, Eleuthera played hostess to a new flock of refugees. They were the loyalists fleeing the American Revolution with their families and slaves. Most settled on the offshore islands of Spanish Wells and Harbour Island, where many of their blonde, blue-eyed descendants live today in small, seaside settlements along the length of this 100-mile-long isle.

Today, the residents are busy with agriculture (the pineapple is king) and the tourist industry. Visitors can easily find empty beaches and coves througought the island for activities like snorkeling, swimming, and diving among the coral reefs.

How to Get There

Bahama Villa on Eleuthera is normally reached by air. Several commercial airlines fly there, inlcuding BahamasAir, American Eagle and US Airways The latter two fly regularly into Governor's Harbour and US Air also makes connections to North Eleuthera airport.

Once there, rent a car. The island is too big to discover either on foot, bicycle, or taxi. Our caretaker can meet you with the appropriate vehicle, along with directions to our place and local food/drink suppliers. If you don't want to go anywhere but just sit on the porch and watch the sunset, fish and birds, that's cool too. Then you only need a taxi ride to the house. You can then pay our caretaker or maid some extra money to deliver groceries and food to you.

Where to Eat

Once you arrive at Governor's Harbour airport, belly up to Arthur Nixon's bar for a nice cold Kalik beer. He will also tell you the best places on the island to eat and hang out. One of our favorite spots is the Sunset Inn south of Governor's Harbour. You can also eat at the Buccaneer Club in GH during weekdays, Mate & Jennies Pizzeria in Palmetto Point, or many other island restaurants. Contact us for more information.
